Character History and Personality: Mal’s story was doomed before the first words were ever spoken. Once a loving wife, mother, daughter, it’s difficult to remember who she was before everything became impossible to define. Caught in limbo, the bottom of the world of dreams, of one’s subconscious, the line between dream and reality became impossible for her to see. Up became down, left became right, and when all it takes is a desire to make your very wishes come true, why would someone want to return? A twist of a thought, a key that should have opened doors and defined what was real and what was not, only served to shatter her ability to tell reality from dreams. Even after her and Dom’s escape from limbo, Mal’s perception was shattered. A helping hand turned wicked, and nothing could be trusted any longer. Before, all it took was a leap of faith, a hop and a skip, and Mal saw her end. But this time, Mal didn't jump. She's still unsure about the world she lives in, unable to tell reality from the dream, and there is something profoundly broken about her.
Mal is the the personification of guilt, of regrets and anger, of good intentions that were shattered. She is a representation of what happens to a person when the boundaries and definitions are stripped away, leaving the world as a question with no clear answer. She was here once before, but that time is lost to her, swept away as another dream that never happened. Waking up again, she will be filled with more questions, and likely very few answers from others. She will, however, be searching for the others. For Dominic, her husband, the man she loves. For Eames and Arthur, friends and companions. But Ariadne… dear, sweet, Ariadne. Even if she does not know her, it is not likely that she will trust her. Mal is not prone to trust, looking upon the world around her with suspicion.

Dom: The lover, the husband. He understands her best of all. Arthur: A friend, a confidant. Eames: An acquaintance. Ariadne: The rival.
